So, I was talking to Claire about what kind of game she wants to play.
She wants to be a rock star mermaid who can shape shift, and has adventures in space.
Help!
Claire and I had an adventure yesterday. We went to her school to met her new teacher (school starts Monday). On the way out of the building, Claire noticed a baby bird lying on the sidewalk - poor thing didn't have its feathers or anything. Chirpin' away. And sitting right next to it was another baby bird which had missed the sidewalk, and was lying in the grass. They both had about 20 minutes of shade left before the hot Texas sun was going to barbeque them right where they were.
Well, I scooped them up and put them under a thick bush, so at least they wouldn't bake, and started heading for the car, when Claire started crying. Honestly, I didn't feel too good about it either, so I suggested we say a little prayer and ask what we should do. After the prayer, I thought we should check again in the school, so we went back in and talked to someone in the office, mentioning the baby birds, and asking if they'd check and see if any of the classes might like to have a science project, or something of that nature. One of them suggested I call the local wildlife rescue organization, who said they'd be happy to take the birds if we could bring them in.
So Claire and I found a small wicker basket in the trunk of the car, got some TP from the school bathroom, padded the basket, and off we went. They had said to keep the birds warm and quiet, so Claire cussed me out every time I put on the AC. And then she complained that she was getting sweaty. And then she cussed me out for the AC again.
We found the wildlife rescue organization easily enough, although it was a long drive (and hot - over 100 in Austin yesterday), and home we went. Warm fuzzies all around!
We went to the pool store today, so we could bomb the living bejeebers out of the (unfortunately) algae-stricken swimming pool. Can Not Seem To Keep That Pool Blue. Anyway, on the way home, I stopped at the local used DVD store, because I had a few extra dollars, and the last time I had been in there I had seen a used copy of Samurai Jack, Season 1. I have 2 and 3 already, and thought this would be a good opportunity to pick up the missing season on the cheap.
Unfortunately, they had already sold the only copy they had. Bummer! So, we looked around a little more, saw some of the Gamecube games, but nothing I could really justify buying. So I was on my way out.
That's when Claire came up to me with something behind her back. She'd done this over and over in the store, showing me a Cardcaptors DVD, and a Star Wars Original Trilogy Box Set in Pan/Scan. (I dislike watching Pan/Scan, which is why I own a Widescreen DVD Star Wars Original Box Set, thank you very much). So, I asked her in an exasperated voice what she had behind her back. And she pulled out this.
A box set of Azumanga Daioh.
A COMPLETE box set of Azumanga Daioh.
A COMPLETE BOX SET of AZUMANGA DAIOH, for only $20.99!
Egads!
Now, for those of you who don't know, I am a HUGE anime fan. And during law school, when we had digital cable, my family saw the entire series as they came up on Comcast's On Demand service. Claire, Reeta and I loved it. It's a cute series about high school kids in Japan. And it's pretty funny. It's a definite change from the various action-oriented anime series that I typically enjoy, but it was so much fun, I found myself going back week after week to check if Chiyo-chan, Osaka, Tomoe, and Sakaki had new adventures. (Love that Osaka.)
So, looking at that, and realizing that it was only a couple dollars more than the Samurai Jack would have been, and realizing how much my whole family enjoyed Azumanga Daioh, and realizing that we would never ever see this again for this price, we bought it. Do I feel guilty? Maybe a little.
I'll try to deal with that somehow as I convert episodes one by one for my iPod.
UPDATE: Hmmm... methinks some things were edited from the On Demand version I saw. Maybe that's just selective memory. But now I've got the "Cooking is so fun..." song stuck in my head! Too... Cute...
