Do you listen to podcasts? Are there any you'd recommend?
Inspired by Alex.
Bwah ha! A topic right up my alley! Of course I listen to Podcasts. I also make my own.
First, stuff I'd recommend...
Michael and Evo's Dragon Page Cover 2 Cover and C2C With Class, as well as Slice of Sci Fi... news of genre books, movies, tv, and more. The C2C With Class is actually hosted by Mike and Evo's wives, who are teachers, and addresses books for younger authors.
Jason Rennie's The SciPhiShow... philosophy as explored through science.
GeeksOn... I don't always agree with what they say, but they're usually interesting.
And I always catch Hugh Hewitt's radio show via podcast. You can set that up at townhall.com.
I'll probably come back and add to this, throwing a nod at podiobooks... as well as plug my own stuff later.
Dinner comes first!
I love old Heinlein. And by old, I mean Tunnel in the Sky, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, The Puppet Masters. I try to read Starship Troopers every couple of years or so. I still think David Gerrold ripped this off shamelessly when he wrote the War Against the Chtorr books. But that's old Heinlein. Number of the Beast is just weird, and I couldn't really understand the Cat Who Walks Through Walls. I decided a long time ago that newer Heinlein simply wasn't for me.
But the older stuff is brilliant. Just tonight, I read through a copy of "Have Space Suit, Will Travel" that I picked up at the local used book store a couple of weeks ago. It's good therapy. Things have been getting me so down lately, it's good to be able to escape for a few hours into a good book. Especially pulp science fiction. It's so aggressively optimistic about how things will eventually turn out.
I read the whole thing in essentially one sitting - took me about four hours. I realize that it's probably been folded into Heinlein's grand mythology of multiple universes somewhere, but at this point, it was just a good read that came along at the right time.
